• So i've loved every minute of owning/riding this bike but something unexpected has landed so this needs to go. It's been through a few forum hands so It'd be nice for it to stay within the community (and so I can buy it back one day!).

Surly Steamroller, 53cm. Most of you know the deal on these, smooth, bombproof track frame which takes up to 35c tyres and is drilled for front and rear brakes in case you want to run it single speed. Spec as follows

Frameset: Steamroller, think it might be a 2010 model but they're pretty much all the same
    Headset: Cane creek
Drivetrain: Stronglight Mygal with new B.B, condor sprocket/lockring, KMC chain
Wheelset: front, Kinlin xr31t on Mavic Ellipse hub, rear Kinlin xr31t disc rim on Zenith track hub, both wheels built by Martin at Arkane wheels (very forum approved).
    Tyres: Gravel King 28c
    Stem: Ritchey 4 axis, acetoned
Bars: Easton Monkey bars 670mm or Cannondale anatomic drops
    Grips: Condor track (new)
Seatpost: Cannondale C3 inline or Easton CT2 setback
    Saddle: Prime titanium (new)
Brake: Shimano standard drop with Tektro cross top lever or TRP drop bar levers

NOTE: XT pedals not included, I can throw in some plastic flats but you'll want to sort proper foot retention for fixed riding.

    The bad stuff.

The cranks are pretty meh. The ring has high and low spots so the chain is slacker than I'd like it. I've just fitted a new correct length B.B and even though it pulls the cranks tight into the frame (without binding) I'm getting a 45mm chainline. I've used a spacer behind the sprocket that's improved matters. It does run smoothly as is but I like to be clear about things.

The paint. When I picked it up it was a pretty bold brown colour that I wan't that keen on. As this needed to be locked up regularly over the last 6 months I gave it a rat look paint job. I love it, others that have seen it like it too, but you may not. I've gone over the frame to check it hasn't thinned anywhere and it all looks good in a really bad way! I would leave it but it could be easily rattle canned or I spoke with Winston at Varonha and his brother will do a nice pro wet spray starting at £100 for basic colours.

The spindle on the Ellipse hub is a little flared on one side so you have to remove that side track nut first otherwise it just turns the spindle. Not a safety issue, would probably confuse a thief!

The rear wheel is a disc rim so is not suitable for a brake.

    Good stuff.

Rear wheel was built 6 months ago using all new parts and is arrow straight and buttery smooth. Front is older and has wear but still runs straight and smooth. Kinlin rims IMO are the perfect all round street rim. Could easily be sold/swapped if you wanted a brake track.

It rides very nicely, even with the average cranks the ride is very smooth and once up to speed just keeps going. New saddle is very comfy, no crashes, dings dents etc, if you painted this it would be very tidy.

Prices on full builds seem to vary wildly depending on finishing kit (£350 - £800). Taking into account the cranks (probably just needs a new ring for about £15) and the potentially marmite paint I'm asking for £375 > SOLD which i hope seems fair.

Bike is available for viewings in Sydenham or can be brought to Clerkenwell during the week. I occasionally head to Bath to see friends if that helps. Hoping not to post atm but will consider further down the line if needs be.

  • Actually coming here straight from your thread, I can say that you seem really tidy and thoughtful about your bikes, so this is a bargain.
It is unfortunately too small for me but I’m sure the next owner will be pleased by this ride !

  • Thanks man, very nice of you to say.

  • Had an enquiry on sizing so whilst I think about it I have an Easton CT2 layback seatpost I can fit if you need setback and I also have some Cannondale anatomic C2 drop bars (ugly but work!) I can fit with TRP drop levers if preferred over risers.

  • SOLD SOLD SOLD.

Pleasure doing business with @user96342 - would happily deal with again.

Donation made to forum, thread closed.

  • And one very excited new rider!! Rides like a dream :) Thank you for passing your steamroller on to a new home.

@jono84 is a great seller - he gave lots of time to answer all my q's, whipped out the tools to make some adjustments to the bars/stem, and gave the time to let me have a couple of spins before deciding. Very much appreciated!
