Absolutely, if not racing, nothing tastes better than pasta or rice out of a trangia. A tin of tuna, some mushrooms, vegetables, or whatever you fancy to liven it up.
was listening to one of Jesse's Podcasts yesterday touring in remote part of nz. He bought loads of rice, a few kg of broccoli and Tuna. And loads of beer to weigh bikes down. Sounds great! -

Fat but it's not super palatable so there tends to be a bit of a compromise. Can you heat anything or is it just what you can carry? I'd be looking at flapjacks - dense, high calorie, decent carbs, high fat, individually wrapped.
I've used those veloforte bars that skinny mentions, they're quite nice. There's a Tesco deal for a sample pack or something for like £1 each.
I'd probably have a combo of stuff, ie. nuts for salt and energy dense calories and carb bars of some sort for quicker energy should you need to get a hustle on at some point.
But then I underfueled in RATN and failed miserably so don't listen to me :)

Chocolate and Soreen are both good calls. I use them both. Chocolate is also a mood enhancer. I started using it after meeting a walker at a camp site who was touring Germany and he carried a block of it as his bonk ration for it's calories and it's cheer-up factor.

I'm not sure I could eat 1kg of dark chocolate a day
Wuss. :P

I also like Trail mixes. Then you can pick out the fruity bits or nutty bits as required. :)

decided last night that we'd take a wee stove (not me carrying it :p) so will have coffee and instant noodles or whatever out on the road which will be helpful.

Ever used dehydrated meals? They could be a lightweight/compact and sort of decent option if you've got ability to reconstitute them.

Idaho instant mash. We use it when backpacking, we sometimes stick some biltong in the water whilst it's boiling to soften it. Or a tin of tuna. 2minute microwave rice is good too but a lot heavier.

Just bought some 800 kcal /159g meals. Probably minging but 800 kcal is 800 kcal I guess

Why not take a bag of pasta?
- dried or tinned stuff to chuck in with it?

Yeah, most of the weight is in the microwave so not calorie-efficient ;)

ease of use - you can eat all these in the bag and there's a good mix of protein and carbs

Actually it's the length of cable you need that makes it unfeasible.

A race that wasn't mentioned here before I think?
Trans Alba Race: https://www.transalbarace.com/about
1600km, 20.000m elevation.Lots of beautiful scenery. How is cycling in Scotland?
-
• #3044
It was discussed somewhere on here, I think we even had the organiser posting.
Cycling in Scotland is amazing, but tough. The weather can be brutal all year round, and the roads can be very heavy. Some of the busier tourist roads can be dangerous so best to go off the beaten track. The further north you go, the quieter it gets though.

Sounds ideal!
If only there was a mtb race around there...

Don't see your name on the roster of the Highland trail 550?
-
• #3047
Or was that the PanCeltic race, that had the organizer posting there? I think some locals were not that pleased with the Trans Alba route.

It comes down the A82 I think, which is the major road to the western Highlands and not pleasant to cycle on at all.
-
• #3049
and the a85, if I remember right and that is another awful road.

Transalba route - https://ridewithgps.com/routes/29965637
Uses A83 for a bit, but not the 83 or 85.
Scottish tablet or fudge etc is 400kcal/100g and easy for your body to use. I'd guess that a lot of the fats and therefore calories in nuts aren't immediately available.
'real' food for me is a huge moral booster after eating rubbish. If you want something cold then oatcakes, cured meats and some cheeses sounds delicious to me and worth any weight penalty!
