    Theoretically, following the canal is 1 mile longer but takes about 5 minutes less. It has the advantage of being dead flat and avoids the absolute shit show of traffic jams involved in going up every west London high street which is what the Uxbridge Road involves. Even if it took slightly longer, it's still the way I'd go just for the reduction in NOx & PM2.5 inhalation.

  • Personally I've always taken the train to Southall from Paddington. I've found the towpath down that way to be a frustrating ride and wouldn't attempt it on a road (race) bike - the surface is too inconsistent. It's OK when you don't actually need to be anywhere though. @Tenners

    Yeh, that's the bastard. I normally take the train too, and hate the pollution @mdcc_tester so kindly reminds us about. The towpath round there isn't suitable for a time-pressured journey (hence the 'faster') either. I guess Uxb Rd is probably the way for it then. Was wondering if anyone had any smart parallel rat runs really...
