• New from Stanforth. Pamira, looks good to me.

  • Looks like a lot of bottom bracket drop for something designed for rough terrain.

  • That looks quite nice. Never understood why they still build frames with 1" treaded forks....

    Looks like good fun!

  • I'm giving away a pair of near-new Vee Rubber Rails tyres over on https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/333939/ if anyone needs them for their next monstouring project....

  • Your 9700 looks a bit cleaner then my lady’s.

  • How is that front mech cable routing doing?

  • It’s held up ok for the last 4 years, and I’ve been planning on replacing it for 4 years. It’s pretty grim, but it works.

  • It’s so comfy.... I want bigger wheels on it though!

  • Bigger wheels or tires? Tires would get you much of that distance, no?

  • nice and thanks all

  • Yeah,
i'm going to try that first .....or split it, and convert the Stache to drop bar!

  • I'm loving the new mini-velo hype.

  • Last year I built up this thing. Got the frame as part of a complete bike and then put some parts bin stuff on to get it working. It was a hoot, but also a pile of shit. The fork was their most basic headshok from early 2000's with a rubber damper and big spring. No lockout and crazy rebound. The BB was also fused into the frame and I thought the whole thing was gonna snap as I tried to get it out using a massive breaker bar, so it stayed put. There was also a pretty big dent in the down tube which was always in the back of my mind when it got rooty. The wheel bearings were pretty gritty, the back slightly wobbled and the whole thing was an inch too long for me.

So, when the fork finally died a wonky death on a Tuesday hills ride last year, I plotted a winter of gathering bits to make a better one and.....Ta-da!

Picked the frame up for peanuts (it has a slightly scary repair to the NDS chainstay, but I think i'd miss not having any fear of catastrophic failure during a ride) and it was the colour way I really wanted. The fork was sourced separately and was little used, but I finally got the damper out to top up with thicker oil last night (thanks @Howard ) and this morning it was an utter dream. Rock solid lockout and then perfectly squishy at the flick of a switch. I've also been after a bike with Conti's Speed King tyres for a while now and can confirm they are superb.

Its been a pig of a build with everything taking about 5x longer than I thought, and seemingly nothing from a selection of donor bikes and the parts bin actually fitting, but its here now and I love it. @hma might be interested as I've followed your "cheap slate" build with interest. Is that finally finished?

  • First iteration looks good, but the second is even better!

  • The better one is a rad monstercross !

  • Did I compliment you on this at the lights by Vauxhall bridge the other day? If so I can confirm that it looks even better outside the internet.

  • Hah, you did indeed. That was before I sorted the forks properly and got the new rubber on, so it wasn't quite ready for it's internet unveil. I thought you might be "on here" so followed up our chat with a spotted.

  • noice, that looks ace! :)

the cheapslate is being used, but not finished yet.. still needs bartape and i recently managed to buy a nos rebound adjuster i've been missing which my boss kindly brought over from nevada.. trouble is, it's in the office and i rarely (almost never :D) go there to work..

so when i stop being lazy, i'll go get that bit and machine a top cap for the lefty to hold the lockout/rebound assembly together.
