Fuck me, this is the last thing I needed on a hungover Friday.
The whole chimp drama went way over my head.
Heres a decade old meme.

My somewhat throw-away question was really designed as a gentle dig a @greenhell who I know IRL and who, I would hope, took it as intended, with a little bit of tongue in cheek. My point was that we should perhaps trust ourselves to know what is racist even if we haven't suffered from it. You're right of course, some people's lived experience is much more poignant and I didn't mean to play that down.
My partner is mixed race and, growing up in South London in the 80s, was either too black or too white, depending on the audience. She happens to quite like Danny Baker and finds the outrage at his tweet amusing. For what it's worth, I buy his explanation having listened to him over many years without detecting any racism - I genuinely don't think racism played a part in the tweet, but it's stupid to not see how it would have been interpreted. His apology and reaction to the sacking has more to do with his "previous" with the BBC than this incident.
Sorry to others for prolonging this...

I see, that makes sense and we both are on the same page. I was half playing dumb.
That whole thread of conversation brought to mind a book by Christine Delphy where she wrote – “How could the Others be like the Ones, when the Ones are only Ones because they oppress the Others?”
Anyway. Not the thread for more of this. Moar memes please!

We are all somewhat unconsciously bias.
Someone could be unconsciously racist.
Someone racist could accidentally reveal their racism.
Someone can be accidentally offensive...But I honestly don’t understand how someone can be ‘accidentally racist’? (although that is as good a summary of the situation as I’ve heard).
He couldn’t really stay in the job anyway, as he’d end up with a following of actual racists.

Please stay off this thread - you are too stupid for, well, just about everything.

I have been accidentally racist. My Pakistani friend has a little brother, his whole family always called him khalia, I thought this was just some Urdu pet name for him so called him it also for about 10 years. I then found out it means 'blackie' a derogatory name for black people and jokingly applied to said little brother due to his dark complexion, felt like a bit of a prick but saw the funny side

Yeah. That isn’t racist (because you weren’t denigrating someone due to racial prejudice). You were denigrating them due to language ignorance. This could have the appearance of being racist to anyone who understood the language but who didn’t know you well.
Not that it’s matters. Just an observation. I wonder if these are such recurring problems is that it depends on intent which isn’t falsifiable and therefore it’s all pseudoscience.
