Scottish tablet or fudge etc is 400kcal/100g and easy for your body to use. I'd guess that a lot of the fats and therefore calories in nuts aren't immediately available.
'real' food for me is a huge moral booster after eating rubbish. If you want something cold then oatcakes, cured meats and some cheeses sounds delicious to me and worth any weight penalty!
you need moderation and balance though. you can't just eat nuts. Not for a week on end say.
