  • Both recent V brake pics would benefit from swapping the conical washers round so the thin one is on the inside, the arms are quite far out. First one looks like it has the washer meant to go right on the outside before the nut in the middle of the stack, from there make sure there is enough tension, probably by screwing in both side adjustment screws, and if they're all the way in you may need to check the spring is in the correct hole in the canti boss or (unlikely) go for a higher tension hole.

  • Thanks! This is a new thing for me. Also: Would compressionless outers make a big difference? I’ve changed frame type from road to mtb and the spongey v-brake feel is an ever present...

  • sit rep after your very helpful feedback:

    • swapped the conical washers out and reduced the distance between the arms
    • couldn't make the outer longer, so I moved the lever to the other side of the bars

    the cable angle is now much more natural, it doesn't push on the noodle any more. as a result inner cable travels freely, well in line with the noodle and the outer. braking feeling has much improved.
