  • It certainly was!

  • Yeah, horribly cold. That section from Lambourn to Henley was the worst for me. Got a coffe at that petrol station and spilt it all over myself due to my hand shaking so much. Great route though.

  • LWL was hard. Will ride bigger tyres next time. Dhal at the end was amazing.

  • Sounds like we had the best of the weather for Brevet Cymru, steady northerly wind but sunny for most of the day. The temperature dropped pretty quick after sunset though, I regretted leaving shoe covers behind.

  • Gutted I missed it. Had some a vomiting child to deal with instead.

  • Also, does anyone need a car share to BCM? Leaving Kentish Town at 4pm on Friday and coming back on Sunday lunchtime.

    Only speedier riders please.

  • Do you sleep at Dolgellau at all or is your plan just to power through?

  • Ride through. Probable cat nap at the next stop

  • Riding the Invicta Phoenix 400 for my PBP qualifier this weekend. I'll be doing it fixed, looks like i'm on the path to a fixed SR and PBP now if it all goes well.

Annoyingly had tendinitis in my foot all week, its better on the bike than off, but still a bit worried how it will be over 400k.

  • Where in your foot?

  • This ride will be sponsored by volterol and ibroprofen

  • I don't take those. Be careful with any NSAIDs in endurance sport.

My wrist is now moving again with pain but much less 'grinding' of the tendon. Icing, eating lots and resting it.

I'd look into why the top of your foot is pained. Seems odd. Are your shoes too tight or loose? Are you grinding your toes to try and grip in the shoe?

  • Interesting article, especially alternatives.
I'm not allowed to take Ibuprofen any more after op last year but I have done in the past.

  • I stopped taking it after first TABR when one of the other riders said he'd seen my "cankles" before on TD when riders were smashing Ibuprofen. Then did a bit of looking and found links to heart problems, I already knew about the gut issues but basically decided they provided so little benefit and so much whole-body drama they're not worth it. I think the last TCR I had 1 or 2 paracetamol and RaTN I had maybe 1-2 per day because I'd done quite a bit more damage.

  • Not sure how much luck I'd have eliminating sugar and grains. Lots of people bang on about turmeric but not heard of the other stuff.

Probably too much walking around in converse over the bank holiday weekend, I've had it before need to get my boots repaired asap

  • Yes, that's not going to work (sugar and grains) on an ultra. Fish oil would be easy to pop, though. They used to recommend it for various heart-related things but found it had negligible benefits so they don't any more, but not heard anyone say it was harmful.

  • Yeah, but unless its efficacy is proved I don't wanna faff with carrying a tub of fish oil around. I mean, is it going to make any noticeable difference compared to taking a paracetamol?
Really what I should be doing is preventing these stupid injuries in the first place. I can't believe elastic has caused me so much drama in all these races. Socks, calf guards, now arm warmers, ffs. Maybe I should just go back to wearing torso covering stuff and using sunscreen.

  • That would have been a pretty aggressive strategy on RATN!

  • Who would have thought the elastic would dig so deep into all that fat?

But seriously, a very annoying issue. I certainly have that issue with socks at times and I imagine I'd have the same problem on a very long ride.

  • Has anyone done this? The Seashore 200, 208k start at Alfold (Surrey?) looping the north weald, down to Eastbourne along the coast then up through the South Downs. 208k.
Official text - 208km cycling event starting from Alford Crossways. Controls at Hildenborough Golf Centre, Seaford and Carat Cafe, Shoreham.

  • I'd still have my down jacket and rain jacket but I'm thinking tight, close to body clothing. It's not working for me. That's kinda why I rode through most of winter in shorts and tshirt to see if I could get used to it. I probably could but it was the lack of food that did me in I reckon, not a lack of layers. Maybe I could use a pair of tights with short socks and lose the warmers/guards and then I can back the ankle zippers off if I notice any rubbing. I could also buy another pair of those arm sleeves or maybe just go without until it gets real cold.

  • Annoying my arms are lean, big but lean. If they were coated in lard like the rest of me this wouldn't have been such an issue. I took two pairs of socks to preempt this a bit - one long pair and one short but then it was the arm warmers that got me. Probably due to the constant swapping from aerobars to hoods/drops when braking for all the bloody bike path RABs.

Nope, looks a nice route though.

That Crowborough > Seaford stretch is on Greenwich Mean Climb but in the other direction, so there's probably some nice downhills there and then the whole coast stretch is pretty fast.
