Go to the sleeping bag thread
Don't buy anything from alpkit
I've literally just answered this question in either this thread or the sleeping bag one -
• #1553
Mods please rename thread
Lightweight tent recommendations (just don't get anything from Alpkit)

apologies, did scan the Touring section quickly for a sleeping bits thread but didn't look hard enough.

Also, what’s the consensus on bike touring round-the-fire seating solutions?
Thermarest z-mat or similar. Decathlon have one looks good enough.

Edit: not consensus, just my opinion ;)

To carry something special for that purpose would be quite unusual, why not just use your folded up sleeping mat?

Mostly because I didn’t think of it...
I suspect I didn’t think of it coz I’d ruled out getting something wet that I would subsequently be sleeping on, but this is undoubtedly being overly precious
On a wild camping trip by kayak I was loaned these odd foam seat-and-chair-back things that sort of buckled into a right angle shape. Surprisingly good, but not compact enough for bikes.

You are aware of the thermarest chair converters?

Anyone got one of these outdoor resesrch. alpines?
Looks exactly what I need.https://www.outdoorgearlab.com/reviews/camping-and-hiking/bivy-sack/outdoor-research-alpine-bivy

I'm really keen on one of their new ones either the Stargazer or Interstellar - looks close to tent like comfort, but weighs around 500g. And you can wear the latter like a massive hat.
-
• #1562
You really want something that big? I guess for things like Italy Divide you want a bit of space to be able to clean stuff/work on bits while sheltering? Maybe drag some of your kit inside the almost tent-like canopy? It's rated better weather resistance than the RAB Alpine which you and I already own.

• #1563
Thanks I'll look

Yeah the material on the alpine seems for 4 season. I think it's the right choice for me.
-
• #1565
They may well be too much kit for you - I want something to spend whole nights in, in relative comfort, and has to have a net to keep bugs out (cos Scotland).
Their new version of the Helium is super lightweight and has designed out some of the previous issues - It's more to the bivvy end of things though.

What do you mean too much kit?
Alpine has a net.
Anyone think I'll get stung for VAT if I order from REI in USA. As its 190gbp there and 300 here from ultra light outdoor.

• #1567
Think REI only ship Outdoor Research products to US addresses...

Weird... I see that now.
Annoying. I refuse to pay 100 quid more. Happy to pay vat etc, but that's robbery.
-
• #1571
Can you ship to someone in USA that's coming over?

Thought you'd be looking towards the more minimal end of the spectrum, what with you trying to get across continents as quickly as possible.
I certainly prefer the look of the new ones to the alpine. I've heard that having the zip closing around the top means it has a tendancy to hang in front of your face when not done up.
The new ones zip down, and so the layers will sit on your lap. The new material is also supposed to be amazingly breathable, so condensation should be less of an issue.

This is for adventure not racing.
I need a new all weather shelter.
-
• #1574
They dont post the weatherproof and breathability of their 3L fabric dor the ascentshell fabric.
The interstellar looks interesting. I'm liking that one a lot.
I'll call and ask when they're open.

While your all here.
Customising a down jacket. Adding zips to the sleeves to turn it from coat to gilet. Who do i ask?
Does anyone have any recommendations for a mid-range sleeping bag? Currently looking at Alpkit Mountain Ghost 300 (£99)
Also, what’s the consensus on bike touring round-the-fire seating solutions? My best so far is sitting on a dry bag but it’s not exactly comfortable.
