New trackie build - tell me what's what

  • having recently moved to South and spitting distance from Herne Hill nows the time to get onto the track...induction session done and skills sessions on the cards...
so - obviously - it's time to add to the stable.
have no idea what's what...doesn't have to be bling as am total beginner - not a noodle frame though - be nice to have stiffness to it...aesthetic classic not vintage - a nice alu frame perhaps..

  • Subbed as I'm about to sign up to do the same thing at HH.

For a beginner I don't think you can go wrong with a Dolan PC. Not sure what the regs there are but I'm hoping frame geo isn't too strict and 170mm cranks and clinchers are allowed.

  • nice! you gonna be going to track skill sessions Sat 12 - 1?

  • liking look of condor lavoro frame...but ££ - few for sale on here but 2 years ago..."still got this for sale mate?"

  • Yep, haven't booked a weekend yet though, you?

I rode a Lavoro at LV and it was lovely, I know a few forum members speak very highly of them.

  • you have to do the indiction session - next one's 11th may i think ...book here https://www.riderhq.com/events/83194/herne-hill-velodrome-induction--taster-3

after that its skills sessions sat 12:00 - 13:00 - pretty sure you don't need to book those...

what size frame you looking for?

  • Reminder that Helmut at Sonic Cycles is still going and has the very nice Intec P1 frames available for a very reasonable £270 (fork not included): https://www.soniccycles.co.uk/products.php?id=102&cat=3

  • Booked!

I have a few frame options but I'm hoping to use my 54 Capo, nice and stiff but plenty comfy on the road.

  • 👍 will check them out

  • They’re very relaxed about rules. As long as your cranks clear the concrete at the right height, and you’ve got 80gi or higher you’re fine. They don’t care if you are using sdp either, as long as all your tension screws are set up nice and tight.
Rules are all on the website, and yeah skill sessions are turn up and ride.

  • @pqr may have a very tasty Lavoro for sells ...

  • oooo...pm'd

  • so i now have an idea re a build - nothing particularly exciting but should work and look ok
    1st arrivals today

  • oh dear.
    go on...

  • It's like a rite of passage. He'll learn.

  • ..am i gonna have to learn the hard way?

  • They are shit. Made of cheese and the carrier system all but guarantees you'll lose loads of skin off of your knuckles when you try and get the whole thing off and the chain whip slips.

  • oh.
shit as in don't even bother with it at all or shit as in expect to replace soon..?
better alternative being a threaded cog right?

  • Shit as in don't even bother. Threaded cogs are far superior.

  • noted - thanks

  • I have had no problems with the Miche sprockets. I have them on three bikes, one of which I have ridden daily for about three years now. They don't seem to be made of cheese, unless it's a particular hard and long lasting variety:
To be fair, I have not had to use a chain whip (which is sort of the point of the carrier system) so I have no basis to argue with andyp's experience with removing the carrier.

  • that video on yaks milk cheese was quite entertaining
