Cycle Mechanic wanted for a full time position at Apex Cycles in Clapham. We are an independent bike shop operating in Clapham since 1992, and we're looking for an experienced mechanic to start soon who will be able to keep up with a busy workshop environment.

Must be:

Fast and reliable mechanic with workshop experience
Able to converse easily with customers
Friendly, we are a very approachable shop and a small team
Able to speak and write fluently in English
Willing to work Saturday (10-6) and Sunday (11-4)
Punctual and committed

Would ideally be:

Familiar with wheel building and brake bleeding
Familiar with Brompton servicing (not essential but we specialise in Bromptons)
A Fleetwood Mac fan (not essential)

We can offer a competitive salary dependant on experience, and a really lovely chilled out place to work with a great team.

Not sure how much truth there is in it but I was told at a recent interview that this is now considered discrimination...

Nah, that can’t be right. I have an engineering degree, Cytech quals, been a licensed aircraft mech, worked on everything from Boeings to Bromptons, so that’s gotta be worth more than some snotter straight out of school, no?

I don’t work weekends tho, sod that.
Oh, and Fleetwood Mac? Christ almighty.

Don't know how much this is just HR paranoia, but AIUI you shouldn't ask for 'x years of experience', as this is an indirect proxy for age; you should be asking for skills-based competencies. Totally ok to ask for e.g. 'experience of working on Bromptons and of rebuilding MTB shocks'.

Interesting, yeah that was just relating to the salary level ie. depends on skills you bring to the job. Totally willing to take someone on who doesn't have loads of training/experience
