Whatever you go for, I would want to play the thing before buying it. When I got my tele I played loads before settling on a standard MIM - it wasn’t the best plugged in but a pickup swap (custom shop Texas something or other) solved that.

@Dramatic_Hammer I should be okay as I play lots of really awful guitars at work, which are abused to the extreme and anything that's half decent will be fine for what I'm looking for.

@Pifko and @rickster They're great finds, but a little too expensive for me at the moment, as I need to get a wah-wah pedal and probably a little practice amp too. I'm not sure I need anything quite that nice...

Is that because the MIM Fenders aren't that great? I was mainly looking at a Fender as it seemed sort of right if I wanted a Strat to get a Fender one, but they get quite pricey.
I've looked at a lot of the selling sites, but there's basically too much choice! I just wanted a tobacco sunburst Fender Strat and once I started looking the list is endless, and sometimes with eyewatering prices...
