I'd say it was unreasonable not to refund for return, but I don't think the seller was under any obligation to do so.
Sounding off about someone not replying for 8 hours is a bit weak, and I guess he told you already that he considered it done and was not going to refund.

It might be a moral one rather than a legal one but given that this is a cycling community which happens to have a classifieds section and not eBay, then I’d say morals > laws.
