You've hit the nail on the head. I've not had a cx bike in a while and had mainly been riding my hardtail MTB recently so initially the lack of suspension fork took some mental adjustment, but over the course of this first ride the joy of cx starting flowing through my body again. It's a different thing to a good xc mtb ride but just as much fun. Can't wait to spend more time on it as I was thrashing about on it and grinning like a Cheshire cat by the end of the ride.
It rides just like a cx bike and whilst the heavier 2.25" mtb tyres are a little less snappy acceleration wise, once up to speed they're unstoppable. Think cx bike that you don't have to be quite so fussy about line choice. The extra traction and grip gives amazing confidence to just smash through the rutted techy sections. I think I'll let a little more air out the tyres next time out, but yeah TL;DR: it's a fucktonne of fun.
New to the Surly owners club. Very happy with mine after 1 ride...
