A year ban without having to pay any damages? I don't see the use of sending somebody to jail, but Mark (the cyclist) is now paralyzed and cannot use his legs anymore.

I don't know if the UK judges can issue damages as part of the punishment, but it doesn't seem unreasonable to me as his disability means a lot of costs to get your house changed, time off work, you may lose your job etc etc...

Poor Mark. His injuries look absolutely horrible. I hope he does manage to get back to sport at whatever level, it looks as if that was a huge passion for him and central to his life up to that point. I've heard of athletes who were able to eventually regain some sensation in their lower limbs, although as he quite rightly says, it's a case of managing his own expectations.

It's still such a conundrum in the law that if, as in this case, the driver was apparently just not paying attention, that any sentence is so much less than if some kind of intention can be demonstrated.
