A year ban without having to pay any damages? I don't see the use of sending somebody to jail, but Mark (the cyclist) is now paralyzed and cannot use his legs anymore.
I don't know if the UK judges can issue damages as part of the punishment, but it doesn't seem unreasonable to me as his disability means a lot of costs to get your house changed, time off work, you may lose your job etc etc...
