I used to deliberately embarass my teenage son by doing that on the doorstep as he left for college. One hand in the air, the other clasped over my mouth with an anxious look on my face.
But I wouldn't bother if there weren't people waiting at the bus stop over the road.
He's a 24/7 screen troglodyte now and I refuse to believe I have anything to do with that.

This morning at the train station, going up a long escalator a woman in front of me turned around to wave back down to her bf/husband/loved one six separate times. Then at the top went over to the window for a further wave.
This expressive display of affection didn't sit comfortably with my cold dead heart.
Perhaps I don't hate people who wave goodbye, just people who do it too much
