Maybe the tracker went wrong?

He's been stopped at a town for half an hour.

Trackers might stop reporting for a while but they don't report multiple off-route points at 60kph without reason. Especialyl when all the "off route" points are on actual roads.

I know, but I don’t know what happened and am trying not to jump to conclusions and am little concerned that our man is now showing second having been making a good lead.

JP has a mechanical https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=10217949405862353&id=1100965333
Rough translation is that he has left the route to find a replacement bit but it's proving hard as it's a Sunday afternoon.

"James Hayden have to come back in Bondanello because he skipped the route"

Was just looking at his tracker... there is a bit where it looks like he went offroute but only a couple of track points so hopefully fixable.

Looks like he's closed the gap pretty quickly.

Sofiane also had to loop back. Looking at some of the pictures its been very wet and muddy. Hope JPs mechanical doesnt end his race.
Pic below from another rider.

Both skinny and JP seem to be in a small place called Governolo and have been caught by rider Media Photo. Strange name, that.

Hope he gets going again. Now it seems to be between skinny and Sofiane Sehili only (pending other unforeseen mishaps).

It must be frusturating but he's less than 30km behind skinny, so it looks like he could stay in the game if he continued the race now. As a race. If the bike works again.
I actually thought Petervary was mostly good at mental part of the adventure races that are more about surviving the conditions, like ITI and SRMR, and that James had a lot more speed. Or maybe the terrain ID is so technical too.

He still has to go back to where he left the route. That's another 70km.

Oh yeah, damn.
That won't take long if he uses a car though. Which is allowed in some races but kind of not in the spirit, couldn't find the rules for the ID now. But yeah. -

It should also be noted that leading the women's race at the moment is Philippa Battye, from Bath:

She's overtaken longtime leader Ania Bocchini.

I don't get it - he broke/lost a thru axle?
-
• #2897
Looks like skinny has got this, barring any other route issues, etc. Neck and neck at the moment with Sofiane, but Sofiane hasn't slept in ages, is riding slower. Skinny will likely ride faster this morning and win by maybe an hour.
Would have been a hell of a race if jay was still in it, but really tough on the riders. -

he broke/lost a thru axle
Prize for guessing who will be the first person we know to break one of those...
He must've had a mechanical or something and got a car? Or the roads are fast. He'll have to go back to where he left the course though.
