My mum has a superstition about giving a knife as a gift. The superstition says that if you give a knife as a gift it will sever your friendship. The way round this is to buy the gift, by giving a penny in return for the knife.
She believes this so much that when I gave her an old kitchen knife recently and she forgot to give me a penny, there was a penny in an envelope in first class post the next day.
