It depends on the kind of riding you do. I do a lot of short journeys at any time of year and any time of day so not having some kind of shade for low sun or intermittent bright conditions is a proper pain in the ass.
On longer planned trips I had made do with changing from glasses to sun glasses but I could write a list of times where it would have been safer to have an internal dark visor which is why I started buying lids with them in. I know a biker who ran into the back of a flat bed truck because of low winter sun!
For me the full face helmet without internal visor was perfected in the early 90's. I had an Arai in that period that was near perfect.

Ideally you want a visor that will stay open a tiny bit in city riding so you have less problems fogging. Between those two the design of the visor is pretty much the only difference. To me they don't look retro, but that's just because I'm old enough to have owned a few in that design.
Did you look at the Simpson helmets? In the 80's they were illegal and everyone wanted one. The AGV looks like the generic full face of that era.
Also if you haven't tried either on yet you might need to do that before you go any further, there are plenty of crash helmets that don't fit certain head shapes well.

No they both do have vents. Apparently the AGV ones are pretty decent, the vent is actually in the top of the visor.
It's behind the rubber strip in the visor, you can see it quite clearly here.
I think I'm kind of settled on the AGV. I've always liked AGV and any I've tried on have been good fits.

Will that get air to the rest of your head though?
My AGV, whilst not retro styled, has 2 chin vents, 2 above the forehead, one at the top centre and 2 at the back. All able to opened or closed

Yeah it's obviously not going to be as well ventilated as a modern style helmet but they're incorporated internal channels from the vent at the front to bring the air over your head so it's supposedly one of the best ventilated retro style helmets.
Also to keep in mind I'll be on a 250cc classic scrambler-esque bike so I'm not going to be going anywhere too fast anyway. Might just get a Bell Moto-3 and some goggles if it's too hot for a visor but Ireland rarely is.

My gut would say AGV would be safer and better quality.
Good that you posted the Nexx XG100R photo, as I thought you mean the one with the silly popper tabs. Can imagine anything worse that fucking around with that.

Picked up my Ex-Zero and took it for a quick spin. It's exactly what I wanted, feels like an open face in terms of weight and visibility. The ventilation is great and it's highly visible. It's got a slightly hooligan vibe about it which suits me. Massive change from the Neotec which is heavy & ponderous but comfortable on fast motorway journeys.
All in all money well spent. I have spent less money on an entire motorbike in the past so I was hoping it would be good :)

Apparently, the 800 series engine was a bit shit...
The new 850GS is getting loads of good reviews - that probably means the 850r will come along at some point this year. I'd wait for that unless budget is part of the equation.

I think I just want something unrealistic.
Something as exciting and fun as my Kawasaki which is 100 odd bhp, in-line 4, 12,500 rpm and scares the shit out of me on A roads.
And yet has a comfortable pillion seat, option for panniers and maybe front screen.
The usual tourer/dual sports fit the bill except for the naked sportsbike, low and planted cornering feel.
I’m not sold on the BMW. The engine doesn’t sound exciting but otherwise it ticks a lot of boxes -

Does it need to be naked? The faired versions look good, maybe better to my eye but I've not seen much of this model.
After much research last night I think I've narrowed the helmet search down to the AGV X3000 or the Nexx XG100R. Too many bad reviews of the Bell Bullitt and I'm not totally sold on the Bell Eliminator although the styling is growing on me the more I look at them (also the vent cover seems like a bit of a faff in our climates and sure to be lost) Blauer 80s are apparently poorly manufactured and the Premier Trophy doesn't seem as nice in video footage as the photos make it look...
