  • The issue I have with PHEV at the moment is the range on them sucks. So they work if you do lots of short (sub 20 mile) journeys, but as soon as you go above that then they are no better than an efficient petrol car.

I have the outlander phev currently as a company car, it is fine, just a bit meh and boring. Real life electric range is about 18 miles, which is perfect for me, as majority of my journeys are relatively short. My colleague has the hyundai ioniq, awful looking thing, but actually decent enough in size, and gets get mpg when the electric does run out.

i'm getting rid of mine in six months, and switching to a jaguar i-pace...

  • So after all your great advice the B-Max got sold and we ended up buying a little Fabia. I bloody love it.
Found a 1.0 turbo, 6speed for a good price. Picked it up on Saturday and did 350miles on Sunday/Monday. It was a delight.
Thanks for all your help :)

  • Perhaps you need the size, but if you're actually interested in range, efficiency and MPG, aren't there smaller, lighter options?

  • Do you mean the outlander or the i-pace?

I live on a farm, with rutted tracks, so do need decent ground clearance (I lost a gearbox on an estate, that was expensive!) When I got the outlander a couple of years ago it was pretty much the only phev which had the required ground clearance.

In terms of the i-pace, i'm pretty frustrated by the choice actually, I want full electric, stated range of around 300 miles (so I actually get close to 200), a decent size\ground clearance (Although track is better than it was), and on a 3 year, 10,000 mile, 3 months up front deal of sub £600. doesn't leave me much choice! It takes out the more expensive Teslas, the model 3 is not available yet, there is a kia and a hyundai, but both of those are impossible to get hold of, so by default I am currently looking at the Jag, unless anyone else knows something that matches my criteria.

  • Do you actually need to drive 200 miles without stopping, or could you go 100-150 miles then have a piss/coffee break while you top it up? Trying to use the battery from 100% down to 0% displayed and then charging fully puts more stress on it than driving from 80% to 30%, charging to 80% then doing it all again, even though the total energy output would be about the same.

  • I have flirted with the idea. my biggest issue is I live in the South West (not of London, of the whole UK...) the infrastructure down here is not great at all, so when I visit family I am going very off track, not down motorways whatever, so would prefer to have a car that can do the range rather than having to rely on one potential charger. I suspect if this wasn't my first fully electric I would be more relaxed about it, but for now the longer range gives me that little piece of mind to jump from hybrid to electric.

  • Early may brings the release of the e golf...
    might be worth a look.

  • Yes, not sure what the range of the new one is going to be, I assume that it isn't built on the MEB platform yet either.

  • I wonder if there is an app/whatever to enable EV users to share home-installed charge points across the UK?

  • Afaik- It is on the MEB platform, that’s why it’s interesting. It won’t be called Golf
    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkswagen_I.D.
I’ve pencilled in the date (8th May) to try and reserve.

  • See that would be pretty smart, a bit like what BT do with their broadband. Only issue I can see is that the majority of home chargers are pretty slow speeds, but could still help if you are visiting somewhere nearby.

I'm sure as time goes on more shops etc would install them like Ikea, so that should help a fair bit.

  • ah interesting! That's why I couldn't find it under golf! This site is pretty handy to see all upcoming releases.

  • Anyone got knowledge of what performance/motorsport engines cost? As a general indication.

  • A 215bhp berg cup spec polo engine is in the region of €9-12000 if that’s any help

  • What would you expect to pay for a 400 bhp flat six?

  • What would you expect to pay for a 400 bhp flat six?

My guess is the old adage, "if you need to ask, you can't afford it"

  • I think we might be able to hit £25k, but lots of unknowns at this stage. We do want to make the engine affordable though.

  • Those are dirt cheap, and can be made to fit in a 911- but they’re for LOLs, not a proper car.

  • Sorry for the delayed reply but...

No, handing it back at the end of the agreement won't affect your credit rating - the whole idea is that this is an option when you start the finance agreement. You'll very rarely get positive equity at the end of a PCP these days as the "bubble has burst" somewhat

Some companies view it dimly if you utilise the option of what's known as "halves and thirds" whereby you can voluntarily terminate or VT you agreement once you've paid back over half of the total amount borrowed - it's a clause in the T&C's not many people know about but it's a potential get out early thing.

New is often as cheap as 3-5 years old with PCP as there are manufacturer supported deals to be had - most manufacturers have deposit contributions on certain models and the total margin they could potentially use to do a deal is around 15% - some models even more than that. Go to a dealer at the end of the month / quarter and know what you want to acheive. Don't use the "well you tell me your best price" and keeping your cards close to your chest thing just makes the whole process more laborious - make a salesman's job easy by telling him where you need to be for a deal and they'll do their best to get it for you. A card ready to place a deposit gets things done!

@golgol PCH is a bit of a tricky one, if you know you'll 100% want the same car for the full term then they can be a good option but if you needed to change the car for whatever reason you'd be liable for 50% of the remaining rentals - plus companies can be super strict on any damage at the hand back stage
