I did try this, but even when the callipers were open the margin was very fine/no difference due to the size of the rims.
No worries though, the shake down from London to Brighton and back helped to reduce the pads by quite a bit to make the fairly usable for now. Will take up the idea of using the shallower pads later.
You could set it up like a disc brake - let the caliper open up fully, pull and tighten cable, and use the barrier adjuster to take up the cable slack.
This isn't ideas or a recommended solution, but a quick solution for the time being until the pads start to wear in.
