  • Interesting, all music related though. Would be interesting to quantify the impact of coached/coxed efforts and also the impact of a crowd, although those both get quite hard to study.

    Also... reports of 330w.

  • I said they were music and there are other studies that show impact of other external influences. For example, there's evidence you will work harder with a personal trainer, simply because the act of being 'watched' makes you want to try harder.

  • Might have compromised power output for aero position too. W/CdA

  • Of course, but that still seems low.

  • I think there is at least a 10% drop in ftp due to altitude so around 360w which sounds more realistic, although I agree, it does sound low.

  • I call bullshit on the 330 watts figure. Wiggins FTP was around 420-430 watts, and he was pretty damn slippery, Campanaerts must’ve been averaging something like 400 watts to take the record, even taking the benefits of altitude into account.

  • Your FTP doesn't drop, it's your ability to ride at it that's hampered. :)

  • Campanaerts must’ve been averaging something like 400

Assuming the same Cd.A as Wiggins, going 1% faster with 17% less air density suggests that 370W would be in the ball park. Depending on how well his power holds up at altitude, that's like doing 400-420W at sea level.

  • Would Wiggo have got Boardman's at altitude?

Xav's your man for that kind of analysis, but my back of a fag packet calculation suggests that he wouldn't, unless he was well up the favourable tail of the bell curve for response to altitude.

  • Hmm, 340W from Bigham, but still seems low. I guess I could go and look up air pressure at the time and location and estimate his Cda but it all sounds like hard work when someone better at this has already done it.

I was thinking the same thing about the 330W and 340W ain't much better.

  • Do we know if Vic acclimatised in Mexico or did he do the fly in at last minute thing?

  • out on the road, cancellara and martin were around 460 to 480 watts for the worlds TT's when they were competitive. or at least that was what was rumoured. those races lasted often slightly over the hour...

  • Only 1 of the 4 Worlds TT wins for both of these riders last over an hour.

  • Also power output lower on track, yadda yadda.

  • "UK outfit Cycling Power Lab analysed data from the 2011 time-trial World Championships, where Tony Martin beat his nearest rival, Bradley Wiggins, by a shade over 1 minute 15 seconds over a course of 46.4km. It estimated that Martin’s average power during the race was a staggering 481 watts"

"it is estimated that Tony Martin averaged over 450 watts for an hour and 5 minutes last year when he won the World Time Trial Championships"

  • Do we know if Vic acclimatised in Mexico or did he do the fly in at last minute thing?

I read that he acclimatised at an effective 3000m overnight by using a hypobaric device, and when he wasn't in that he was at the actual 1800m of Aguascalientes for at least a couple of weeks.

  • In which case his power drop-off 'could' be much less than the 10-20% quoted for an rider that hasn't acclimated. It seems to be quite individual how much performance loss occurs. Me for example, I climb just as bloody slow at altitude as I do at the bottom of the mountain ;)

  • loads of contributory factors there. that 330w seems really rather low. the lad was hauling a bigger gear than wiggins, albeit at a higher altitude with thinner air. there's a difference in rolling resistance on the track and skinsuit/ aero package (i.e. the campag wheels are very quick allegedly). basically its tricky to gauge...

  • The obvious ones are he's heavier (maybe) and shorter (definitely).

  • Wonder if Wiggins will come back for another crack at it.

  • slippery

Ignorant non-tester question--should that be 'slippy' or is 'slippery' used as well, I mean in contexts not involving Jiffy bags?

  • I hope not.

  • I’ve no idea. But you got the point so it works.
