My gut feeling is that you've been really unlucky with the repairs. A 1960s seamaster should be solid as fuck after a proper service and repair. Do you know what broke? Who fixed it? Sounds like the work wasn't up to scratch IMO.
In answer to your original question, there is no viable way to swap out the movement for something more reliable or cheaper.
well i didn't say because I was worried you'll all label me a heretic, it is a 1962 or 3 [edit. that can't be right, maybe 65] seamaster, not a gold one though.
