Was it really 29 in the Mexico 'drome? Given he can't drink then perhaps he was right to not add crowd heat (if possible). Still don't know why he didn't have some music on, maybe it would upset his rhythm but most science suggests that performance improves when you listen to music you like at a suitable tempo.
