In other news, my gf had attempted fraud on her cc on Mr Porter for £8300... I keep asking myself if it was a watch and if the thieves have any taste.

The automatic versions although not quite as aesthetically pleasing as the manual ‘Professional’ version, can be found for reasonable cash. And at 39mm they’re a sweet spot size for most (as opposed the 42mm Speedy pro).

Perhaps you guys can help me. I have decided that I would like a black diver watch. For t-shirt and jeans days.

The colour I would most like would be a matt black like that Alfine watch I see posted in this thread from time to time. But it is also my understanding that for diver watches Seiko 5 Sport offer a very nice sweet spot between price and quality.

My research so far has led me to Seiko SNZF21K1. It's awesome in the way it kind of looks like a Platonic ideal of a diver watch. Functional and with no excessive detailing. But it's gun metal rather than black, and seems to be sold out everywhere in any case.
The other thing I found was Seiko SNZG85, which looks more like a proper black as far as I can tell. And it's reasonably priced too. But perhaps a bit OTT?

Can you guys think of any other suggestions?

I'd put a SNZH53 on black rubber/nato. Steel case but wears much blacker than it is..

If that's too expensive, the new Seiko 5 in the SKX007 style case looks like it will come in a few black versions. The Seiko PVDs are often a bit gunmetal rather than black-black though.

Don’t know if it matters to you but Seiko 5 usually aren't strictly divers watches as they don't tend to have certain features that ISO certification demands (eg lume on the second hand, lume pip on the bezel, etc).

They do occasionally make proper divers in black, eg the black edition turtle (sold out):

And also many of the Tuna variants are all-black but those are usually pretty serious and have serious price tags. The grey version of the Street Series baby tuna (SNE537) is maybe worth a look?

@Merak there is a blue faced alkin model one on ebay atm. Not black but still really nice. 1 day left, £88, no bids, but the reserve isn't met. Could probably get it for £120-140ish

Don't normally like black watches but that Squale is really, really nice.

Buuuuut they put a quartz movement in it. Which is fine in itself but a massive miss IMO.

Mechanical was not fit for purpose, given the performance goals of the watch. Besides, it's a really good quartz.

^^ $500 is a lot of money for a quartz Timex given the lower prices of the mechanical marlins.

It is nice. They also do a black Milanese mesh strap for it if that’s your bag.

Mechanical movement couldn't work in the viscous oil. It had to be a quartz.

But damn is it a sexy watch.

Lol. Yeah. Not the Sinn. I like quartz. I love my Aerospace - I just think hand wound mechanical would've been way better on the Timex. Seems lazy.

Looks lovely but their quartz movements are so loud as to be unusable. Literally wakes me up with the ticking if I wear them overnight.

Just got hold of this vintage Lord Seiko. Unfortunately it seems to be dropping time here and there. I’m not sure if this is because it’s been dormant for ages (flown from Japan then sitting in a box).

Any ideas? When I bought it the vendor shared a video showing it attached to some doohickey that said it lost less than a minute per day.
