Surely now Gilbert ranks as the finest classics rider of his generation? That’s 5 x monuments, 1 x Worlds, 4 x Amstel, 2 x Het Volk, 2 x Paris-Tours, 1 x Flèche and multiple stage wins in the Tour, the Giro and the Vuelta.
I thought it was a cracking race yesterday, the way the front group ebbed and flowed, with someone looking strong one minute, then vulnerable the next made it hard to pick a winner. Gilbert and Sagan looked strongest and I’d counted Politt out, when he launched that searing attack on sector 3. Gilbert did amazingly well to get across to that.
