Anyone know anything about disc brakes?

  • Seconded - after my first foray at the weekend I’m dissapointed I didn’t back myself to do “wet work” sooner....

  • You do know you're buying quite a basic version right?

I'll say go XT/XTR if you want longevity or Hope RX4.

  • Depends what you use it for, I'm guessing @coventry_eagle was a lot of polo. I've currently got a zee on my polo bike that's been going for over three years, and a deore before that for longer, if it was on a strictly riding around bike I expect they would've lasted longer, but crashing a fair bit and hitting them with things isn't normal use.

  • Which 140 mm centre lock rotors are good and reasonably priced ?
    Slx hubs.

  • Best I had are Shimano SM-RT99 but they're not cheap

  • My GF has just got a new bike with TRP HYRD calipers. I tried to bed them in a bit and the rear is totally fine, you can lock up the wheel really easily. The front however is far less effective. The lever action feels nice, but they just don't bite very well.

Any tips to get a better grip between the pad and rotor? Does it just need more bedding in or could I improve it a bit with sandpaper?

  • Is it better or at least equal to a rim brake?

  • Actuation arms fully returning when you release the lever? You should be able to get the little locking thing engaged.

  • Front is much worse than a decent rim brake, rear is prob better than a rear rim brake. That's what makes me think it's the pad/disk interaction.

  • I'm putting a bigger cassette on this afternoon so I will check then - you mean when the leave is released can i screw in the little setup locking screw?

If I can't what does this mean? It's a Croix de Fer straight from a shop so it was all set up by them.

  • It's a Croix de Fer straight from a shop

Take it back, get them to fix it.

  • It was a shop in Devon so they shipped it - last one available in that size and colour.

  • Distance selling regs still apply.

  • I feel like it could be a simple solution that it would be great to solve myself, rather than going to the hassle of shipping an entire bike back to Devon.

  • Right then . You will need a bleed kit . A set of torx keys the right size mineral oil rags gloves pad spacer Cotton buds . Then watch the how to video on trp website several times .

Bleed kit wouldn't work so i took the top silver cap off . Added more oil backed off the piston until left and right would work independently topped up the tank again and put the lid and seal back on .
Sounds simple, oil all over the place.

  • Anyone have any experience with Shimano L03A resin pads for Shimano road disc brakes?
Don’t think they’re readily available in the uk but are 40% more wear resistant than L02A resin pads.

  • Means the pads aren't going to auto adjust for wear (possibly initial set up if new) as the arm returning all the way allows the fluid in the reservoir through, usually letting the arm go back and pumping the brakes a few times will sort this if it's the issue. Setting these brakes up wrong like this is pretty common.

  • been meaning to come here in praise of avid bb7s for a while
two pairs on two bikes for 3-4 years still as sharp as the day they were bought, they've been through epping in the depths of winter and through drought ridden dusty english summers
have adjusted a few times along the way and changed pads in them too, both jobs easily done, have learnt how to fine tune them properly now aswell
    can't fault them

  • Ok, so pal picked up an MTB for me though despite obvious very light use there seems more fatigue in the brakes band some uneven pad wear. Anyway, first thing I noticed was poor/spongy braking with lots of redundant/wasted pull and uneven wear esp on rear so cleaned disc and new pads and it's much tighter without wasted pull and significantly more bite. Tried burping front one (for 5 mins) to no avail and there appears to be little pad wear. Is it a case of only option is a bleed? Avid DB3 btw

  • Thanks, and thanks for the bleed info @pacef8
The arm does go all the way back, and I did a more extensive bedding in. It's definitely improved and works fine, still seems like it has a little less bite than the rear, but I'm going to avoid bleeding at this stage.

  • Hello. New to the world of discs and too hungover (lazy) to trawl through this thread.

Recently purchased a straggler frame and spyre calipers but unsure of which adaptor I need for front and rear. I think it’s post mount to IS (?) but there is a few on the market and not sure which are best and will work. also I have 160 rotors

Any help would be greatly appreciated

  • You need IS to Post 160.

  • Thanks. Just purchased

  • Spyre usually come with adaptor.
