The political landscape is very different today than when Assange went in to hiding. If the rumours are true then he helped Trump get in power with the whole thing about Clinton's emails, so he's probably at far less risk of being extradited to the USA now, and if he is then he probably won't get nearly as harsh treatment as he would have 7 years ago.
