  • Mwah ha ha ha. This time next year, our 007s will be worth 10k

  • Good plan, I'll try that.

  • My Omega is back form servicing. Gotta go collect it later this week.

I hop they've made it look like new because it was fucked when I took it in.

  • the problem you'll have is that a lot of great brands went bust in the mid 70's due to the oil crisis and the huge shift to quartz movements. So buying a '79 dress(ier) watch is going to be a little tricky as there wasn't much about.

Perhaps a Longines or Omega Geneve might fit the budget? Otherwise there're plenty of lovely watches in your budget from the early 60's if you don't want a '79 manufacture date. I'd start with a Tudor oyster date

Edit: haha exactly what @inchpincher already said :)

  • I irregularly browse Chrono 24, eyeing up 1985 watches in preparation for my 40th (got a few years yet), and came across this today:

    https://www.chrono24.co.uk/heuer/titanium-automatik-chronograph-3420-ref125206--id8402797.htm

No box, no papers, not really mint, but still seems cheap at £800ish. No idea of values tbh, but other Heuer chronos seems to go for 2k mark and this is titanium too so I'm surprised. Unloved case shape?

  • That’s really nice for an 80s watch

  • I think you’re right, it’s just a bit marmite. ‘85 was the transition year into Tag Heuer so it’s quite late production, apparently the bracelets were a weak point... https://forums.watchuseek.com/f29/fs-vintage-heuer-titanium-chronograph-automatic-lemania-mint-condition-reduced-746409.html

  • Orrrrrrr you could get an 80s Rolex (insert classic model name here) and be done with it :-) You've plenty of time to save!

  • 1985 watches in preparation for my 40th (got a few years yet), and came across this today:

Just in case you haven't thought of this, buying any sentimental items that will be 40yo from 2024-25 will have a hefty premium. Equally not many people will be selling them from ~2021-ish.

Also be willing to be a bit flexible on the year as any "year" is always a bit vague.

  • I've got an 80s Rolex on the way, hand me down from my dad.

  • That's why I've started looking already, I'm hoping before 2024 I see something I really want and buy it in advance.

I've got my Steinhart Ocean 1 Vintage (wedding present), G Shock, Gold Seamaster day/date (80s), Rolex OP (80s), Citizen day/date dive beater that I'm probably going to move on, so I'm thinking I want a birth year auto chrono. I also have a quartz Seiko chrono I got for my 15th birthday so while I rarely wear it, it was my first watch I wore day in day out that wasn't an Argos £15 Casio special.

  • "OK so I've done the mock ups, but just ignore the typeface its just a placeholder, one of the defaults from MS Word 98"

    "CHANGE NOTHING I LOVE IT!"

  • Just what I hoped you were going to say. Might get a safe to house my SKX009.

  • Gotta really love Gundam to drop $5600 on that.

  • Or an easy profit. 1/300

  • I'm going to the US next week. Are there going to be any mad bargains? I'm after a junghans or similar thin dress watch.

  • Whereabouts? You may find some grey market deals. If you are able to order stuff online, somewhere like Topper or Timeless Lux will discount retail prices heavily, too.

  • hrumf was kinda liking the new Rolex GMT-MASTER II blue/black... retail supposed to be 9k USD but can't find anywhere with it

  • I'm going to be in Boston this time round, but could wait until I go to Portland a couple of weeks after.

  • Isn’t that because it hasn’t been released yet and you don’t spend 100k at your AD per year therefore have no chance of getting one?

  • I think, but I’m not sure, someone here saw one for sale in Australia for around 22000 AUS.

  • I saw one go for sale hence I assumed it was on sale, but yeah seems to be Septish if you got a reservation in. Ah well.

  • I saw a previous one for 18k USD... seems stupid for a 9k watch.
Rumor has it with them cutting back to just two variants there might be more supply.

  • Slightly out of my comfort zone in relation to price! Lol
