  • My Dad's daily watch, which my mum gave to me recently. It had a bracelet on that I couldn't get on with. Nato strap arrived this morning and whacked it on a few mins ago.
By no means in the same league as the other watches in this thread but it means a lot to me, it's not too big on my dainty wrist and I'm much happier wearing it now. 🙌

  • That’s nice. Good to have the memory too - probably more important.

  • Mrs Radar has a 34mm quartz Max Bill that I gave her in 2014. The scratch resistance of the crystal has been really good, as you say. The problem has been a hairline crack that developed after a couple of years and has recently spread and deepened - you can feel the edge with your fingernail now. It’s away for replacement at the moment.

  • That sounds...not good enough. Not something I heard of before though.

  • Nothing beats sentimental value when it comes to watches.

I just spent £150 on parts repairing a £20 Seiko and £300 repairing a £250 Omega for that reason. They are priceless to me.

  • one's gotta do what one's gotta do

  • ^^ If anybody is interested how I'm spending so much, both watches were damaged in a flood and left in wet box for three years. Dial restoration and full service with a more expensive donor watch for the seiko and dial and hand restoration with NOS replacement movement for the Omega.

The Omega had some corrosion damage to the bracelet. I thought about leaving it for character but it was a bit too much for me so I'm having the gold filling redone on that.

  • Cheers for the suggestions. I've been meaning to go to Alsal for a look for a while but their opening hours don't work too well with a 9-5 job.

  • Me neither. No idea whether it’s a manufacturing flaw, or whether she cracked it by mistake. Either way, it’s out of warranty.

  • My bet would be manufacturing error. A tiny offset when setting the acrylic would probably put quite a force across it.

  • Before and after pics when finished?

  • I didn't take before photos. I'm a moron.

  • Draw it. With an lfgss poo as well.

  • I tried to come up with some vintage suggestions earlier but went down a serious Seiko wormhole, sorry.

It’s a tougher brief than I initially thought, I looked at Tudor (Oyster variations), Longines, Omega, Seiko and Zenith - mainly because you can date them. The stuff from ‘79 in budget just aren’t the quality you should be buying... something might show up if you set up enough ebay/thesaleroom alerts but you’ll need to be super patient.

Plenty of superb vintage pieces sub £1k out there, especially manual dress stuff from the 60’s.

Edit: also stumbled across this 34mm Tudor Oyster Date linen dial which for £1300 is almost worth a credit card splurge. Refinished case and probable relume but man that dial and date wheel. Yeah yeah I said I hate cyclops...

  • you are. But that said, I'll settle for after pics once you get them back.

  • I am very into that Tudor.

  • Alsal is doing the work, I have three watches with them at the moment and waiting for a fourth to be delivered to there. When the fourth is ready, will pick them up and post pics. Hopefully in a couple of weeks.

  • So the everlasting rumour that the SKX007 is out of production does seem to finally be coming true this year. They're replacing it with a Seiko 5 Sports model in the same style. 4R36, display back, hence the lowering of the water resist rating to 100m / 10 atmos.

    Edit: my first takedown notice!

  • I've just taken a punt on one of these as a replacement for the Steinhart.

My NATO needed replacing because it's starting to whiff and this wasn't much more than a NATO or ZULU.

If it's not very good I'd like to try a perlon.

A "copy" of the Panerai Assolutamente

  • Have they finally sold one to every watch collector in the world then?

  • My NATO needed replacing because it's starting to whiff

Through the wash in one of those protective bags with some anti-bacterial additive sorts them out. I need to do my MN, which I can confirm stinks up just like a regular nato.

  • Damn. Really nice other than the ‘Automatic’. Hate that shit.

  • Yeah, I’m not a fan of that font... sorry LFGSS... it’s a 50s Americana thing, not a proper cursive. But anyways. There’s a new seiko 5 logo on these. And an orange one with gilt bezel??

Bit of a shame it’s not a certified divers watch anymore, but that had been on the cards for a while.
