    If you want to ride the RRA (and a freewheel might come in handy) why not use some other steel chainset? The Raleigh BB spindle is standard size, even if nothing else is.

    Undoing those chainring bolts - is it possible to clamp the head of the bolt firmly in a bench vice and then turn the crank itself? Once the ring is off it could probably be welded, although there might be a risk of distortion through unequal heating of the ring.

    Meeting time: My preference would be 9.30, but there's plenty of daylight, so it doesn't have to be then. The later the start though, the worse the traffic.

  • I had thought of the bench vice option but don't have one of my own. Having said that, the chainring design has so many 'spokes' to it I think it may hold up anyway. And if the weather is nice and everyone else is doing it I may well ride the Paragon fixed on tubs or on 27 rims anyway and just change the rear sprocket to a 16 or 17......
