• Thought I'd ask!

    I'll be riding 48x18 gearing and 25mm tubs.

  • Well I know you're perfectly capable of getting around on that gear, but I guess you'll probably be the only one on tubs.

    Long ago we all used sprints on training bikes ( because 700's didn't exist and 27's were such hard work) - we'd all have at least two spares and if necessary we'd lend them to some one unlucky enough to puncture three times. When 700's became the norm, if you didn't modernise and stuck to your old sprints there came to be a serious risk of getting stuck in the middle of nowhere.

    This risk is much greater in the wet: apart from the increased likelihood of puncturing in the first place, there can also be a problem if the rim or the spare tub get wet since this will mess up tyre/rim adhesion. I have known slippage to tear the valve out of the rear tub.

    As you will have gathered, 700's are one bit of modernisation that I really have embraced.
