The front view:
The Russ style front forks are not drilled for a brake and the Resilion front cantilever came with the frame. These brakes do work fairly well, but they are a bit troublesome.

Works rather well that set up above. . I will be there on the 2nd June on my fixed Paragon I think, as I've discovered a rather alarming crack in my chainring on the RRA (they often seem to crack in the same place it seems, right where they screw into the back of the crank arm a la Chater Lea. Both my chainrings have it and the current one is stuck on the crank, I can't shift one of the bolts to get it off and I don't want to mash it up anymore than it is already.) I shall have a good ride with it beforehand to see if it holds up and take it from there.
What sort of time were we thinking of meeting in Staines, as it's take me a while to shlep across London to get there early....? -

How strict are we being about pre-50s for this ride? Mine is a 1938/39 frame with mostly 50s components.

Not strict at all

I agree with Anidel - not strict at all.
I can't imagine inspecting bikes at the rendezvous and saying to some one: "You can't come with us, your handlebar stem is too modern".
All I'd say is that it wouldn't be good manners for a strong rider to turn up on a modern machine and start a tear up (it would be pretty much as bad to do that on an old bike)

Thought I'd ask!
I'll be riding 48x18 gearing and 25mm tubs.

Jeff 80:
If you want to ride the RRA (and a freewheel might come in handy) why not use some other steel chainset? The Raleigh BB spindle is standard size, even if nothing else is.
Undoing those chainring bolts - is it possible to clamp the head of the bolt firmly in a bench vice and then turn the crank itself? Once the ring is off it could probably be welded, although there might be a risk of distortion through unequal heating of the ring.
Meeting time: My preference would be 9.30, but there's plenty of daylight, so it doesn't have to be then. The later the start though, the worse the traffic.

I'll be fixed on 25/7.
Really looking forward to this. -

Well I know you're perfectly capable of getting around on that gear, but I guess you'll probably be the only one on tubs.
Long ago we all used sprints on training bikes ( because 700's didn't exist and 27's were such hard work) - we'd all have at least two spares and if necessary we'd lend them to some one unlucky enough to puncture three times. When 700's became the norm, if you didn't modernise and stuck to your old sprints there came to be a serious risk of getting stuck in the middle of nowhere.
This risk is much greater in the wet: apart from the increased likelihood of puncturing in the first place, there can also be a problem if the rim or the spare tub get wet since this will mess up tyre/rim adhesion. I have known slippage to tear the valve out of the rear tub.
As you will have gathered, 700's are one bit of modernisation that I really have embraced.

I'll be riding tubs, on fiamme sprint rims, though i will be loading the tyres up with Stan's tire sealant before we leave and bringing a spare tub just in case.
-
• #1447
My older wheels are Fiamme sprints like @falconvitesse
I'll also be wearing a tub and probably have a can of Pit Stop stashed in my pocket!

I had thought of the bench vice option but don't have one of my own. Having said that, the chainring design has so many 'spokes' to it I think it may hold up anyway. And if the weather is nice and everyone else is doing it I may well ride the Paragon fixed on tubs or on 27 rims anyway and just change the rear sprocket to a 16 or 17......

Good point! No haven't got them.
And I recall, last time I tried to put it together, the BB axle was too long. This weekend I'll grab everything and sort thru it
The rear mech:
The block is 16/18/20 with 46/32 chainrings.
