For anyone who is interested, I have fitted a SunRace 11-40 cassette to a small CdF running Tiagra 4700 with a 50-34 chainset. I used a road link and the full 116 links in the new chain.
It seems to work well and doesn't sound hideous in the big-big combo and although it's not ideal, there is no chain rub in small-small.
