For my laptop I am quite content with my Nord VPN, and for the occasional rummage around the interwebz I often use Tor browser. But I am thinking of getting an Ipad for travel purposes. Some of my trips will go to countries that (to my knowledge) couldn't care less about your digital rights. So a travel Ipad is only really worthwhile if I can access internet and email without worrying about surveillance.
Any advice appreciated. -

You can get Nord on ipad, although some territories will block it and you're somewhat screwed when you're in those territories that do wholsesale blocking/surveillance at a high level.
A VPN back home (it's less likely to be blocked than a commercial VPN) and then your home connection routing you to the internet via Nord or whoever would be one option.

Thanks.
And how would the Onion Browser (or similar) fare in such a country? -

I imagine if the VPN connection to your home network works then it will be fine. The issue will be if that's blocked.

did anyone see that documentary on the silk road and dread pirate roberts
fascinating look at his life and the hunt by the federales to track him down -

Nord works well with onion. As for countries blocking VPNs, I’ve used Nord in mainland China with no issues. Technically illegal but VPNs are common there. As in everywhere common by those with no skin in the politics, so all corporates and most foreigners. If you’re a prat they’ll take your phone and use the vpn as a reason to make you a very humble prat.

Ta, yes China was a concern. My list for 2019 includes two ex Soviet republics and an Arab country. Maybe another Arab country too. I don't dabble in trade secrets or counter espionage, just hate the idea of leaving little digital crumbs around that eventually could get used against me in a travel insurance case for example.

Going to the USA for an academic conference, I should get a stand-in phone or do a factory reset, right?

In my privileged white male role, I breezed through customs/immigration at SEATAC with barely a glance.

I work in tech and some people I work with are from scary countries and do stuff to do with nuclear (decommissioning)

This looks awesome:

The basic version of Warp is included as an option with the 1.1.1.1 App for free.
Whoooaaaa

Brilliant! Cheers! I've upgraded the app and now in the queue

this is excellent!

Interesting. Will have to have a proper read. I'd love to ditch my old school VPN and NetGuard.

Interesting, but my version of the 1.1.1.1 app never actually worked for me. I can't connect to the internet for some reason. Plus it will mean that I can't use an adblocker (Blokada actually uses 1.1.1.1 anyway) unless they also allow you to set the hosts file.
I'm in the queue for the VPN to see how it works, although something like NordVPN gives you 40Mbps and only slighter slower ping than no VPN so I suspect I'm not really the target.

I like that NetGuard allows me to block specific stuff, like I can block all my apps sending anything related to Facebook and that's basically every fucking app. So I'm not sure I will use this but it might be a good option for my missus.

Yes that's a pain. Can't block ads with 1⁴.
So you're saying no need to use 1⁴ with Blokada running?
-
• #2323
In the Blokada settings there's a choice of about a dozen DNS servers, one of which is 1.1.1.1. If you use that it's just the same as the Cloudflare app running (you can't actually run both anyway as they both pretend they're a VPN and you can only run one at a time).

Thanks. Never looked at the settings menu. Also noticed the 'keep alive' function, Which I assume works to stop it turning off.
