Doesn't look much like this anymore though -

I've been tempted by a bar bag for ease of access but always a bit worried about how it will effect handling.

So Audax is the Italian equivalent of Randonneuring?
-
• #8
Euraudax (original form of audax)
Participants in the original form of audax ride in a group, at a steady pace set by a road captain. The group aims to cycle at 22.5 km/h between stops. The route is planned with designated stopping points. In longer audax events the group may ride between 16 and 20 hours in a day before stopping at a designated sleeping location. The goal of the audax is for all group members to finish within the time limit. A support vehicle is allowed to follow each group of riders.Randonneuring (allure libre form of audax)
Randonneuring is similar to the original Audax style in that riders attempt to complete long-distance cycling events. However, instead of riding together in a group, participants are free to cycle at their own pace (French: allure libre), stop or sleep wherever they want and form groups randomly, provided they stay within the time limit.
In some countries (e.g. USA), a clear distinction is drawn between 'Audax' and 'Randonneuring'. In others, such as Australia and Great Britain, the original Audax style is relatively unknown, and 'Audax' and 'Randonneuring' are used interchangeably.

i would say audax is largely unknown in the us. until reading this i assumed they were the same thing.

As far as most people are concerned Audax and Randonneuring are interchangeable.

Love a good long ride. I'm a bit left of centre and my longest 200km+ rides are done on flat bars with ergons and flat pedals. Got my first 300km Audax (Wonderfully Wessex) coming up in June.
Each to their own I guess.

They're fine. Can't ride without something on the front now (well I can on a CX bike).
Only issue with bar bags is lighting. In the UK I just dont trust a light lower than the bars. For now I use a basket with a Restrap basket bag. Has a zip on the top, so easy to access mid ride.
But on my drops bikes, I like the Carradice Bar Bag. Easy to get into, plenty of space.

Hats off to you riding 200KM + with those tyres and luggage that makes you as aerodynamic as a brick! Must be equivalent to 400KM+ on a lighter steed. Legs of steel!

Question for the experts; if you would get a custom audax bike, would you keep it oldschool with rim brakes, qr and straight 1 1/8" fork or use all the new standards, tapered fork, through axels, hydro discs etc.???
-
• #16
Depends on budget no?
You can get rim brake stuff thrown at you for free. -

It's very personal, get something that fits, ride it, work out the rest later.

Still my favourite bike after almost 3 years.

Well,
It’s “just” a custom alu frame which has been designed by a friend (who love huge tubes) and welded by one frame builder who still works for Colnago. In fact the paint came from one lab in Tuscany which colnago is supposed to send part of the frames to spray.
The bike itself is a bit of everything . It has been SS, then geared (1x) and the fork is a custom project. I was lucky enough to find a Chinese lab to produce one that has both internal brake and internal dynamo cables.
Steering is 1 1/8 to 1.5 , brakes are TRP hydro, groupset shimano 5700 10 speed.
It works great for my legs.Bag packing is done by one of the most skilled woman in the planet aka Rusjan. Love her job, love her humanity .

It's very nice, and a bit different from the usual skinny tubes stuff (I like aluminium frames too). Maza was a brand of sorts back in the day, no?
-
• #24
Maza has been always a third-party framebuilder and there are frames "branded" by Maza or Emmezeta. Perhaps more on the '80s.
I love it, large tubes are peculiars!

Love that, very cool. How far were you heading?
With the Audax season ramping up why not start a thread to show off our (I really mean mine...) audax bikes!
