One of the New York papers once ran a series of polls amongst both long-established Irish Americans and new Irish immigrants to compare their attitudes. The one I remember was about favourite/most-hated films. For the Irish Americians, "The Quiet Man" was top. For the Irish, it was among the most hated, being a queasily patronising example of Oirishry.
