  • You doing it in London? Just break into the place late at night in a balaclava and get it done. Or just wait, I guess.

You tigging the yoke to the bb?

  • Yes. All tig from here. Although I might braze the seat stay wish bone junction.
I need some quiet time in the workshop. I might be able to do it after work but ideally a Saturday or Sunday. After work gets a bit rushed and I am often knackered.

  • @Manson7am send over some photos of a sample and a mockup of the lettering I suggested.
It is a bit tricky with the drop shadow I had asked for so we are shifting it slightly. It is better this way for sure and I can't wait to see the final results.
The gold and the black handdrawn lines are on point.

  • I have converted my rando bike into a porteur for my mate back in Denmark. I reused the rack from my wife's Carlton and built the frame up with 1x10 SRAM 42T / 11-28T.
I will need to re-braze the rack to crown mount as it is squeezing the mudguards a bit.

  • Your thread is very full of awesome as always. Looking forward to the finished mtb!

  • Such a lovely, comfy-looking bike. :)

  • Thanks dudes.

I have done a PS mock up of the MTB.

I am not sure what to do with components. I am getting some cash from the porteur and have the wheels floating about already. Maybe I should buy the SLX groupset or use spare parts from the bin to begin with.
I have a pair of Tune Bigfoot cranks I might buy a new spider (+80gbp) for and use with a 34T chainring. I can use that with a 11-36T cassette and my X9 rear mech and a Paul thumbie with a SRAM 10sp barend shifter I have kicking about. BUT I don't really have any hydraulic brakes as I gave my dad mine. I fancy a mix of parts and would like some really expensive fancy disc brakes, but the SLX groupset just seems like such a good deal compared to spending money on stupid square taper cranks etc.

    ftfy

  • True.

So, the question is. Should I go for the much more useable and cheaper 110bcd spider or retro mtb 5 arm 94bcd which limits me to use Wolftooth NW. The 94bc spider looks a lot more sturdy that the 110 bcd spider. But chainrings are suddenly 65gbp. Either way spider needs to be purple right?

I am also excited to buy this custom frame bag by @jaeyukdapbap aka. Envelope Bagworks

  • I like the cutouts in the 110 spider, but I think the bigger issue is that 110 limits you to 34t minimum.

I don't think a narrow-wide is super necessary with a clutch mech unless you're really smashing through rough stuff, especially with rear suspension. So that gives you some options for normal single speed rings too.

  • I see. 34T is fine for me tho. I have had 32T and 36T and both worked fine for me

  • Looks like shifter won't mount on the thumbie.

  • I think it's a pretty good idea to have a look at the complete Deore group set's you can find floating around at around 300€, sure it's "only" a 2x10 speed but they do come with brakes (no rotors though).

  • Good shout. Alternatively I give it to my brother to test ride a bit. He gets SRAM trade and might want to have fun building it up and it could end up cheap for me.

  • Looks seriously nice. And is that frame bag yours or are you thinking about it?

But man you gear your bikes way too heavy imo. 34/36 on 29" wheels will be too heavy even in places in dk, especially if its loaded. More so, i cant imagine when you'd be close to spinning out on 34/11 unless its down hill on a gravel or asphalt road. I spin out at what im guessing is about 40 or 42 km/h on 36/11 but on 650b wheels, but i do imagine your legs as tree trunks, and it is a matter of preference :)

And btw, if your x9 is type 2 you can run a 11-42 from sunrace (just barely) and for sure an 11-40. Or you can get a sram 1x road/cx mech and run it on a 10sp 11-42 cassette no problems, cuz the pull ration is the same as a 10sp trigger. Id suggest stick with the 94mm spider and go 30t or 32t

  • Framebag is a horrible Photoshop steal of a bag Sam at Stayer had made. Id like the same basically.

I am listening to your concerns, but I can climb most things at 34/36. And if I had to get off and push the bike once in while that will be ok.

    #dieslowridewhenever

But hey I might just try a 11-40 next time. I think the clutched x9 is type yes?

  • another vote for 30t up front, 11-40 sunrace at the back
never wished for a tougher gear, riding this unloaded or laden down on my hardtail for many years

  • This?

    £30 Sunrace cassette
    £10 KMC chain
    £80 Tune spider
    £20 X9 trigger
    £65 Wolftooth 94bcd 5arm chainring
    £15 UN55 73mm

    £210-215 ish including shipping.

    But no brakes :(

  • But no brakes :(

Surely you don't need bling brakes straight away. Get something cheap as a stopgap, so you can have the bike up & running?

  • yes. you are right.

  • I'm confused now... Are we still making you a fresher, newerer, betterer one or are you buying that one off Sam?

  • You are definitely making a new one :)

  • Sunrace 12s shifting set comes in around £200, and the 11-50 rear cassette looks mad, although I suppose that’s the price without cranks... But then again, more gears more fun (apparently)

EDIT: And the Cassette fits a standard free hub body!

  • This is getting out of hand. Basically 32T and 11-36T is enough for me.

  • sounds like a good plan.
get some deore m615s, second hand they're only like £30 for a pair. I really liked mine.
