  • Have been looking at bagman supports, and seen some images with extra struts going to rack mounts on the seatstays, any ideas where these are from?

  • Carradice used to sell the Bagman 2, which had the rack mount struts; they tended to flex and break when loaded up because all the tubing was Aluminium. Various people have rolled their own - pretty sure someone on here did it and documented it (maybe in the bike packing thread?).

  • Cheers. That'll be why I can't find one for sale. Now you mention it, think @veLLo did it on his Winston built custom. Will have a look through cp threads.

  • I contacted Carradice asking if they could remove the leather patch on the new Carradice lightweight Audax bag. They responded saying that it wasn't just the patch on the front but also two reinforcing strip on the back and 3 straps.

They told me that they could make me a one off vegan version replacing these with another material for a fiver extra. A week later I've just taken delivery and couldn't be happier. Hats off to them.

  • For a fiver? I love those people.

  • Anyone have any diy saddle bag support know how?

  • I've used a Topeak saddle bag (small one) to support a larger Carradice in the past to great effect. If that's what you mean?

  • Lightweight rack and you’re done.

  • Lightweight rack and you’re done.

    No rack mounts :(
May fab something off canti mounts

  • Tubus gives you multiple options for mounting to frames that have no braze-ons for racks.

  • salsa do this, which i had considered using to bodge a bag support...

  • Yeah I was thinking of one of those (a couple companies make similar) and bracing it off the brake bosses.

  • P-clips are your friend!

  • Some bits I have laying around to play with.

  • Thoughts on A Carradice SQR Slim for a 5 day credit card tour, enough space when coupled with a bar bag?

Also what are the merits of a Carradice over a Restrap or Apidura style saddle bag?

  • Much easier to access to rummage around for stuff is the main one. Easier to attach to bike too probably (no rubbing etc), don't need to pack carefully, work fine when empty, ready access via side pockets.

Imo the sausage seatpacks are only better at being lightweight and more stable over sketchy terrain. If you're mostly on roads a carradice will be fine.

Or just do what most people on here do (self included) and buy whichever will look cooler on your frame.

  • Cheers - weight not really that much of an issue for me and the penalty looks to only be 400g or so.

I'm still undecided on which model though SQR Slim, Tour or Super C. Pretty sure I don't need the extra space of the Super C but then equally it's quite handy to have...Can anyone with a Slim or Tour confirm that the quoted 16 litre capacities are accurate?

  • I've used one (https://www.carradice.co.uk/bags/saddle-packs-sqr-bags/super-c-sqr-slim) for credit card touring for quite a few trips. I think it's pretty much perfect. No fussing about with straps, it is easy to carry off the bike and it doesn't swing on the bike. The only thing that you have to do is put some gorilla tape around your seat post to make it clamp nice and tight and not damage your seat post. I didn't have a bar bag for those trips but I have a rando bag now and I would take that for future trips. I like the look of the more traditional Carradice bags but I've used this to carry laptops, locks, shoes etc and I can't really fault it.

I used the Restrap saddle bag for two commutes to test it out before a credit card tour. It was not great. The outside thing developed a hole as it rubbed on the seat tube collar, the dry back ripped and it swayed about. I sold it and bought an Apidura for the trip instead.

I used the Apidura cross country seat pack to cycle to France on a five-day credit card tour. I had a bar bag too. It packed nice and neatly, was robust, not too much sway but was a pain to get on and off. I've still got it as it would be better off road than the Carradice but I've not used it since.

Edit: The 16 litre capacity is spot on. It carries loads of stuff.

  • Ideal, yeah the slim looked the most suited to what I'd use it for.

    Thanks for the detailed response

  • I have a QR bagman and wanted to buy the non-qr block. Rang them up to enquire about price and they offered to send me it for free. Top service!
