  • Does anyone know if Decathlon might follow up with some bikepacking luggage also?

  • Still kinda small market for Decathlon to consider it.. perhaps in a few years

  • Someone posted a link here earlier this week, possibly in the bikepacking thread, that mentioned Decathlon’s plans to do their own bikepacking luggage range.

  • Is this thing necessary? Is it stock on Arkoses?

  • Doesn't do any harm. If the chainring isn't a narrow/wide, maybe best to leave it on, just to be on the safe side.

  • Also can anyone advise on the easiest way to change the gearing on my Arkose Two to give a little extra help in getting up hills?

It's currently as stock with 38t at the front and 11-36 at the back.

Would a smaller chainring be the easiest change, or a new wider cassette at the back? Presume there is limitations with the rear derailleur as to what it can take at the back? I know very little about this stuff, sorry.

  • Assuming it's 5 bolt 110bcd, Hope retainer rings go as low as 34t in that bolt pattern, they're narrow/wide, so you could do away with the front chain guide, unless you ride particularly gnarly terrain, then leave it on.

  • Cheers. Looks like SRAM do a 34t:

What does narrow/wide mean in this context? (sorry)

  • every other tooth on the chainring is slightly wider. helps with the chain not dropping off

If you're 110bcd SRAM 5 bolt then these will work and arent that much more expensive than the Evans ones

  • I've got a Wolf Tooth narrow wide chain ring and chain has come off quite a few times even on road, albeit mainly downhill, fast and a bit rutted.

  • Yep, hence the need for a chainkeeper.

  • Ah I see. Thanks for your help!

  • Used Hope and Raceface, never had a problem with the chain dropping off. Some use off road, mainly on road, but still never had a problem (touch wood, not a euphemism).

  • They already do.
Picked up a whole set which adds to more bits than I'm ever likely to use back in January (Canada Water store). Was dead cheap. From memory prices ranged £7-20 max

  • Might try those next time then, as Wolf Tooth wasn't the cheapest either. No idea how different the designs are. I also wonder if they become less effective with wear.

  • Are you sure the chain isn't too long?

  • Are you using a clutch rear mech?

  • No, just a standard Tiagra rear mech. I know I could get clutched, but intention was a cheap set up. It not a regular thing, just annoying when it happens.

  • Not using a clutch mech, no chain keeper, never dropped a chain, road, gravel, bunny hops

  • You need to ride faster.

  • Is this going to be the new gear ratio chat?

  • I had the same step up, end up shortened the chain which stopped it coming off.

Also; freehub body, some freehub body are a bit stiff which at speed, can slacken the chain result in it coming off.

  • Not possible, the laws of physics won’t allow it

  • My method, that seems to give enough tension, without clutch or chain guide, chain around chainring, around big ring on the rear (missing out the derailleur), + 2 links. Gives enough tension on small rear cog and doesn't over stretch the derailleur on the big cog.

  • @PhilDAS did you switch out your arkose frameset? what did you go for instead?

I am still loving mine, however at a size M it is just slightly too large for me I think. 54cm is more my size so possibly thinking of upgrading to a diff frame at some point
