Well, a few possible reasons:
1) They can then use that info to discredit it later (along with all the genuine votes).
2) They are keen on sowing division and discord and by stoking both sides they promote more acrimony and bitterness.
3) They just want to make sure everything is confusing and they can hide their more meaningful help in favour of brexit behind a smokescreen of meaningless help with a petition that will be ignored.
