Funny this, last time I had some work done my tattoo guy (who’s both young and old school) was telling me that when he started getting tattooed you had to follow an order, can’t remember the exact order, but like you had to get chest and back done before arms, upper arms before forearms etc. And that if you didn’t follow that there were consequences. Comparing to now where it’s like that image, and people come in and ask for 2 full sleeves, “what would you like in them” don’t care as long as they look cool... and people getting hands and throats done as first tattoos. I’ve kept quite traditional in getting upper arms done, then upper legs, then calves.... got a small piece on my back which was my very first at age 14 or 15, but don’t have anything more on my back or chest/stomach cause I’m fat and hairy.
It does make me kind of glad I didn’t go full sleeves and they seem more common than halves, plus I even got my inner upper arms done rather than skipping 😂

I think he is confusing things with sailing traditions related to tattoos, but maybe it is a UK thing...
full sleeves are played out, leg sleeves and body suits are the way to go!

I agree, a friend was a Brighton tat con the other week and said kids getting cheek/hairline tats done was the order of the day :/
I’m really proud I’ve gone piece by piece slowly to fill my arms. At the end of the day there’s far more people I want to get tattooed by than I’ve got limbs for sleeves. A lot of the lads I work with have identikit sleeves done by the same artist, he’s good but it shows a shocking lack of imagination in his customers as they’re all weirdly similar..In with @conor_tattoo on sat

He’s from NZ and he’s not confusing shit.

Again this may be a thing where he is from but that is not uniform for the old days in general. I will say this comes from an American perspective on traditional tattooing, but an informed one.

Might have something to do with motorcycles as well.

Ok so biker stuff not old school oldschool.

Ok so there's things where regulations are a smart thing to have but tattooing isn't one of them.

Except for medical regulations cause thats how people get hepatitis.

No I definitely think there’s a tradition of there being an ‘order’ in which you get tattooed.
My experience of it is from being tattooed, having several friends who are tattoo artists, several more who are very heavily tattooed and a wife who works in (the piercing side of) a tattoo place.
My take on it wasn’t hard and fast rules more....etiquette? You would ask or expect someone who hadn’t tattooed you before to go straight in to visible locations (hands, face etc). It’s like an earning of trust or establishing a relationship sort of thing.
My arms are still very patchy but I’m sort of glad, lots of room to fit more stuff in and I’m really glad I don’t have the identikit sleeves.
I’ve very little on my torso too but I’ve been thinking a back piece might be in order soon, just waiting till one of the artists at my wife’s place needs some bicycle mechanic work doing so I can work out a skill swap!

Yes, of course, totally agree.
Just meant to say that nowadays people are getting tattoed where they want when they want.I also get the oldschool approach of earning trust / establishing a relationship,
but that's changed I guess - you see 100 tattoos of the guy on instagram and then go book him and that's that. -

That's an interesting point actually. I guess it's easier to trust somebody you've never been tattooed by before these days because of the sheer number of examples of their work online. Having said that, I think the increase in more prominent tattoos is probably just down to a change in taste and the fact that tattoos are a lot more socially acceptable than they were in the past. My mum even has one and she's relatively conservative (small c).

No not really, at least in western tattooing there where certain things you got for specific accomplishments. This whole idea of trust or relationship with the artist are all relatively new ideas. In the old days most tattooers did it as a second/side job. OR where carnies, sailors or tramps. Tattooing on the weekends or on pay day. The mentality was mostly "pick some flash, give me that money and get out."
If you want to talk about placement on the body and meaning and the like you would need to look at tribal tattooing. Like what you see in the Philippines or asian pacific Ex: Samoa, tonga etc.

Japanese too.
I have an incorrect Koi. It’s swimming down my arm, should be swimming up.

It is not that it is in all cases incorrect but it changes the meaning. Descending vs climbing.

Let's face it - the bigger issue is that you're wearing a fucking leopard leotard.

This meme is me. One full sleeve and nothing on the other arm, hahaha.
I do have my upper inner arm, elbow ditch and full elbow done though so I didn't take the easy passes..
