• Writing to your MP is worth it in as much as I did get a reply from my MP in the end. Just try to find out the right email address to use.

  • Yep, I got a reply from Oliver letwin this morning.

“I am therefore firmly persuaded that the job of Parliament under these circumstances is to arrive at a solution that will be accepted by our EU partners and will receive majority support in the House of commons so that we can have a smooth and orderly exit in line with the result of the first referendum but respecting the fact that many people voted to remain, and therefore obtaining, so far as possible, a continuation of the trading relationships that have contributed to our prosperity.”

  • Response from mine which, although thorough, I presume is a template response...

Thank you for your email about the UK’s withdrawal from the European Union.

Many local residents have contacted me about Brexit, and many have been asking for me to do four things; to vote against the government’s deal; to oppose leaving the EU without a deal; to extend Article 50; and to push for a public vote on Brexit.

I agree with all these four approaches. That’s why last week I once again voted against the Prime Minister’s deal and helped ensure another heavy defeat for it. I am pleased that the Speaker has now put it on record that the Prime Minister cannot bring substantially the same deal back to parliament for another meaningful vote. If another version of the Prime Minister's deal is brought back to parliament, I will not be supporting it.

There is currently no majority in parliament for any proposed way forward, and I will support moves in Parliament to find a consensus on a way forward. I believe that the Prime Minister has acted with irresponsible intransigence in relation to the Brexit process, and the reason we are in our current situation is because she has been unwilling to seek a consensus within and outside Parliament. I believe that leaving the EU is a profound mistake, and I hope we will reverse the decision, but if we are to leave we need to agree as close an economic relationship as possible to protect our economy.

I have been a supporter of a public vote (with an option to remain in the EU on the ballot) for some time, and I believe the compromise put forward by my colleagues Phil Wilson MP and Peter Kyle MP may be a possible solution to the current impasse. This plan proposes that Parliament allows the government's deal to pass with the proviso that it is then put forward to a public vote, in which "remain" would be the alternative proposal on the ballot. I believe this may be the only viable way to get a public vote proposal through parliament - although my view is that any deal that is eventually agreed ought to go to the public for a confirmatory vote. In any future public vote I would campaign strongly to remain in the EU.

I hope this is helpful in understanding my position.
