The point about briefing is just scoring a point back. But it's fairly petty - 'she said she'd meet with just me but then invited other people'.
As far as I can see, he was at the table and had the opportunity to make his case - we can expect May to ignore it because she doesn't listen to anyone, but at least if he's stuck around to make the point then he's done what he can. It actually helps him if more people are there, as they can say what happened so more chance of his actions being reported, and more pressure on May.
But no - feel aggrieved and leave, and give May a chance to say that she tried cross party unity and was rejected. So we're back to square one but she now has an excuse.
