  • long stems = shite handling on a MTB
    sure thing on the stem

  • It's looking likely I'm going with a suspension fork. What does this mean in terms of front luggage? Barbags only?

  • Can only attach stuff to the lowers

  • Hose-clipped on anything cages and such?
Surely a drybag on the bars is still okay?

  • Drybag on the bars will still be okay, just need to be aware how high the crown/top of tyre will come up at max compression and make sure you have clearance for that.

  • one bottle cage on each lower, attached with hose clamps.
harness on the bars, I strongly recommend this one which is on sale now:

  • I bought these when I collected the frame, in a fit of 'i'm a mtber now' madness.

  • i'm a mtber from the 90's now

Ftfy. More like a turbo hipster trying to bodge a silly touring bar ;)

Excited to see how this turns out btw!

  • I have no idea what to do with them ha. Will look 100% stupid on modern wide bars surely? I just liked them and the shop is a charity shop so no harm done

  • https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bikepacking-Cargo-Cage-mount-brackets-custom-Carry-additional-items/332533768369 there's these type of thing? Just make sure you get the right diameter for your fork lowers.

  • Is 3D printed stuff that strong?

  • Honestly, no idea, probbaly a tester question.

Plastic can be pretty strong if used in the right context. Those look pretty burly, and the most you can put on a Blackburn any-cage thing is 4kg. Let’s be honest though, who’s putting that much on them? Most people are using them for sleeping pads and sleeping bags etc. most of which are probbaly well under a kilo.

  • have you sorted forks yet? just spotted these and I was reminded of this project.

  • Yes I have! Got some suspension forks on the way from @Eejit

  • I recently tried some 3d printed mudguard adapters, for some Exotic forks:

    https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2188491

They cracked after about 100miles - a vertical split from top to bottom right through the material. I guessed maybe a manufacturing fault rather than the plastic I don't know much about 3d printing, but I guess quality might vary greatly between 3d printers / even out of the same printer? These had been done on my brother's home printer so I wonder if better ones could be made from more expensive/commercial printing services?

  • I’m on the verge of pulling the trigger on a very similar project to this - any updates? Would love to see how this is looking!

  • lol no :(

It's under my desk. I have frame, bounce forks, headset and bars

  • Ha! Shame, I’m jealous of the rear facing dropouts, although I’m going geared with mine.

Looking forward to eventual progress (on both!)

  • To0 early for a thread resurection?

Ended up with two inbred frames, hopefully collecting the second tonight, one with verticle drop outs and another with horizontal drop outs. Was looking for horizontal dropouts as I have a back pedal brake hub geared wheel set so was thinking of having that as an off road go anywhere bike or is that a silly idea?

  • Sounds lethal - do it!

  • Sounds great, @M_V is a big advocate also
I'm at the stage with this where I kinda need to say fuck it and invest or sell it

  • Have both the frames now. The vertical drop out frame been used and could do with a fresh coat f paint, while the new frame is one with the interchangeable drop outs and not rear facing as I first though. The paint has been touched up badly so was thinking of a refresh for that too.

So fork wise, I have the solid on one fork, which I like.

So sell the second frame or build it as a 1x8 or 9 and then sell on?

  • I’d assume you’d be better off selling the frame rather than building up as you’ll likely get more overall? I sold my inbred for £80 in the end and it wasn’t immaculate.

  • +1 no point building it. Jealous you have the on-one fork.

  • I picked up my 650b wheels for my surly today, look pretty sick on this imo. Won't be using 650b when it's built but wanted to do a little mock up
