This. Figuring out what bike you want is nice. Finding out if you actually enjoy falling over in the mud would be more important at this stage :-)

I bought my old Kona Coiler for €400 and loved it to bits. It was a pig uphill but so much fun to shred downhill. Worth a look if you want something cheap and cheerful to get started...
You could do far worse than something like this...
