Is 3 years a good lifetime for a caliper? My old 105 brake that I had on my sweet fixeh lasted ~7 years and never died, it's just sitting in my parts bin. Am I being unrealistic expecting the same durability from a disc brake?

I'll say go XT/XTR if you want longevity or Hope RX4.

Depends what you use it for, I'm guessing @coventry_eagle was a lot of polo. I've currently got a zee on my polo bike that's been going for over three years, and a deore before that for longer, if it was on a strictly riding around bike I expect they would've lasted longer, but crashing a fair bit and hitting them with things isn't normal use.

+Simba is right, I had a Deore for good 3 years then ditched it when it leaked at one of the piston.
Simple enough to swap out too.
