  • What does the lfgss hivemind think of these portable, usb-c powered screens as a second screen for laptop?

    AOC 15.6”

How different/useless is colour accuracy from a MBP screen?

  • I thought so... I mean £3k for a laptop is... well...

  • I know nothing about them but if it's a second screen for panels, emails, etc colour accuracy isn't crucial is it?

If it runs will with a good refresh rate it seems like a pretty good idea. I've tried to run an iPad as a second screen with duet display but I can't get on with it

  • You'd only really know the answers to those questions if you'd actually used one so I'd be reading reviews.

It's a tenner cheaper on Amazon and there are quite a few reviews on there. It got a meh review from Laptop Magazine:
    https://www.laptopmag.com/reviews/monitors/aoc-i1601fwux-usb-type-c-portable-monitor

    Another review here:
    https://www.neowin.net/news/aoc-i1601fwux-review-a-portable-lcd-display-with-a-major-flaw/

  • I use a USB 3 Asus one when I'm travelling with work. It's fine, no noticeable lag, just shows up as another monitor (in Windows). Couldn't really comment on colour accuracy, I've watched films on it and not noticed any issues.

Main issues I find are getting a stand to have it at a decent angle (the bundled one is a bit shit and I've not really seen anything slimline to replace it) and it's a bit bulky (it's a bit delicate so you need the case which means that it's pretty much the same size as another laptop, also another thing to get out of your bag at airport security).

  • if it's a second screen for panels, emails, etc colour accuracy isn't crucial is it?

That’s exactly the planned use. I was thinking swatches and color picking thingies could be a potential PITA.

  • You'd only really know the answers to those questions if you'd actually used one so I'd be reading reviews.

... which is why I’m asking if anyone has used one ;-)

  • Long shot but does anyone have a power supply for a 23” Cinema Display (A1082), as mines just been diagnosed with having a faulty one.
    Let me know..

  • I have a 24inch ACD for not much more than the price you'd pay for a PSU your model...

  • If it’s an a1082, I may offer you some cash for it. Seems the faulty power supply was a known issue, which is why so many are for sale second hand without them..

  • Nah it’s the newer one I’m afraid.

  • Tbh I just thought you hadn't googled it ;)

I was interested to read about it anyway as I didn't know USB-C monitors existed.

Asus > AOC IMO so maybe look at the one @aggi uses. I think both those reviews said the AOC one works with macs fine but sometimes doesn't work with Windows so the Asus one sounds like a better bet if you were to ever swap laptop.

  • Might take it anyway if the price isn’t too steep. What’s the model number so I can have a google?

  • Good point. All input appreciated.

  • They had a similar problem with one of the time machines. Only required a £6 capacitor replacing. I know it's not for everyone but these can be pretty simple fixes.

  • Drop me a pm with what you’re looking for, for it.
I’m waiting for repair company to give me price on replacement power supply.
@Airhead seems a waste to chuck a perfectly good monitor because the power supplys fucked. I haven’t googled but I will now if it’s a fix that the layman can do or if it’s just replace the power supply.

  • So which 27" iMac is the one to go for? Looking at processors it doesn't seems to be huge differences in the lineup, but perhaps the graphics card will make up for it? On the other hand £500 over 3-4 years of use isn't that much to argue over

It'll be used for photo work in PS with quite heavy files, then the usual design stuff in Sketch etc

  • Seems like you can just use the cable and splice in a 24v led supply, should be matching the wattage of the one you're replacing.

  • Could I use one of these with my hack desktop?

Graphics card has 2 x HDMI, 2 x Displayport and a DVI-D connector but my monitor/keyboard are in the living room and PC is in the cellar and I only have HDMI and DVI-D cables between them. Would also need to work for when it's running Windows 10...

  • I need a laptop by end of next week, should I buy this?

  • no, buy a late 2013 15" macbook pro instead

  • If you need to work on it longer than an hour here or there, I personally think 13 is too small. If you hook it up though, it's a great form factor

  • I’ve found a home brew fixit that explains how to splice in a new power supply, which might be a last chance solution..
It seems pretty straightforward but I’d be nervous about doing it myself

  • You shouldn't be. Even if you bought a wire stripper and some Wago connectors it's not going to cost the earth. and 24v is pretty safe.
