• I want to get a new rear disk brake wheel for my long distance/bikepacking/ultra racing bike. I have a hand built dynamo front wheel and the matching rear with 28 spokes would cost £290 for my lbs to build.

I have some DT Swiss R23 Spline wheels for shorter rides, but the rear has had a bit of a kicking so I would like something that I can put my trust in for longer trips including the Transatlantic Way in June.

Question is, do I go for some Mason X Hunt 4 Season instead as it gives me a whole (slightly lower spec) wheel set for just £30 more. I will only use the dynamo for longer stuff so a matching set would be nice.

Are they reliable in people's experience? The main difference between them and the single wheel that I can see would be spoke count (24 vs 28) and the spokes (sapim CX ray vs Pillar on the Hunts) and build quality. I think both rims and hubs will be much the same.

    Thoughts welcome!

  • Don't know anything about Hunt but I get Scherrit to build mine (factory builds = yuk) and the only thing that's stopped them so far has been cars. All the cool kids have mismatched wheels. The bigger the difference the cooler the rider...

    DT Swiss 350 - £150
    Kinlin/DT Rim - £50
    CXRay Spokes - £60?
    Build ?

  • Yeah, I know it’s the best option, but I don’t want to spend too much on a wheel I only use with the Dynamo.

Rim is £60 - DCR 24/30 (basically a Kinlin). Spokes are the killer, quoted at £80 for the wheel.
